In years past, North Shields was a major fishing port on Tyne and Wear’s North Sea coast. Until the 1970s, there were thousands of sea going fishermen and thousands more land-based jobs dependent on fishing. Today the port currently has modest facilities to reflect its contemporary status. The Fishermen's Mission has an historic local presence faithfully serving the local maritime community since 1897. In the intervening years the local Mission Centre has earned a good reputation for quality service provision and the Superintendent continues this good work. The Fishermen's Mission receives no government or lottery funding and depends solely on donations, to continue to provide our services.
