The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was conceived in 1995 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and together with William Ward, founded Clipper Ventures, a company that would run the race. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was the first person to sail single handed and non-stop around the world between 14th June 1968 and 22nd April 1969.

This is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. It’s a record breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. A total of 12 yachts take on this longest ocean race.

The whole race takes a year, but is divided into 8 legs and 14 – 16 individual races, you can chose to do the whole lot or join individual legs. I am sailing on leg 8 which consists of 3 races commencing with crossing the North Atlantic covering approximately 4253nm and finally finishing in the UK.

I have never sailed before and I am joining as an amateur crew member. Training is very intense. You are required to undertake intense training broken down into 4 levels, each requiring a week at sea. In between I am practicing locally and Scarborough Yacht Club members have kindly assisted me with this. I have also passed my RYA Competent Crew certificate and hope to take further qualifications.

I am excited about raising money for The Fishermen’s Mission

As the only national charity that works solely with fishermen and their families, the Fishermen’s Mission offers financial, pastoral and spiritual support as well as a vital emergency response service. The North Atlantic has always been an ocean I wished to cross and experience some of the challenges that our Fisherman endure in order to bring back Seafood to our shores. As I work in the Seafood Industry (on land) this is very close to my heart.

The support I have had on my journey has been overwhelming. I am particularly grateful to my main sponsor Money web Financial Services www.moneyweb-ifa.com and to The Ico Co www.theiceco.co.uk who have supplied much of my specialised kit to assist with training and on the race.
