Whitby’s fishing heroes to be honoured with special VIP lunch at one of the town’s leading seafood restaurants

For years they’ve been the backbone of Whitby’s glorious fishing heritage and on Tuesday, October 11th dozens of fishermen and their families will all gather together at Whitby’s leading seafood restaurants, the Fishermans Wife, for a big celebration in honour of their tireless service and dedication.

The day, which starts at 12noon, promises to be one of fun and celebration with a whole host of guests including Whitby’s Mayor Cllr. Mrs Noreen Wilson and Janet Deacon, North Yorkshire and Coast Area Director for Welcome to Yorkshire. Members of Whitby’s local lifeboat station will also join the event. Guests will be treated to complimentary fish & chips.

To add even more fun to the occasion, the Fishermans Wife seafood restaurant, which is based at Khyber Pass, are pleased to welcome Albert, who is the mascot for The Fishermen’s Mission – a national charity which provides a lifeline of support and welfare to fishermen and their families.

As it’s National Seafood Week (from Friday, 7th October to Friday 14th October) the family-run restaurant, thought it would be the perfect time to say thank you to all those people who helped make Whitby a jewel in the crown of the fishing industry. Those attending will include retired fisherman and those who still brave the north sea waters for that special catch of the day.

Graham Reed-Stephenson, owner of the Fishermans Wife said: “For centuries, seafaring has played a huge part in the town’s makeup from whaling to ship building and fishing, with many men going out to sea in cobles to fish for crab and lobster while their wives made nets.

“While the industry has faced many challenges, and is definitely smaller than it once was, it remains at the very heart of the town and Whitby seafood is still considered some of the best in the world. We felt it was about time we celebrated the achievements of these families and thanked them for their years of service to the town.”

The VIP Seafood Week Lunch will take place on Tuesday October 11 at 12 noon at the Fishermans Wife.
