Meet the C Aware Team!
C Aware is a first-of-its-kind programme that we run in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to increase cancer awareness amongst fishermen. Such an important project needs a stellar team behind it! Based out of North Shields, meet the dream team behind C Aware:
Deb Johnstone – Cancer Community Programme Manager
Deb has been with the Fishermen’s Mission since November 2023 as the pioneer of the C Aware programme. As she’s come into this role, she has been a great joy to learn about the fishing industry and the average day in the life of fishermen in North Shields and beyond.
Deb loves to meet new people and spending her spare time with a good book.

Elle Charlton – Cancer Community Engagement Officer
Joining the team shortly after Deb, Elle has been our feet on the ground, talking to the fishermen of North Shields and learning about the kind of support they need. She loves learning about North Shields’ fishing history from the people she works with. Elle also boasts of having one of the best sea views you could ask for from the C Aware office.
When Elle is not running around North Shields (especially the quayside – carefully), she loves testing new recipes, hiking with her dogs, and getting stuck into new creative projects.

Danielle Murray – Cancer Community Champion Volunteer Lead
Our newest member, Danielle, joined the C Aware programme in November 2024. Danielle is an ex-Royal Navy Hydrographic Surveyor who shares a wealth of stories as she meets members of North Shield’s fishing community and learns everything there is to know.
Outside of work, you can find Danielle at the side of a football field cheering on her kids (they have six teams between them!) or taking her overly energetic golden labrador, Buddy, for a walk!
