Maritime charities, the Fishermen’s Mission, The Seafarers’ Charity and Stella Maris joined forces to support a new annual National Fishing Remembrance Day for those who have lost their lives while fishing at sea. The first National Fishing Remembrance Day which took place on Sunday 12 May 2024. Ali Godfrey, our Director of Business Development says ‘ Our port team have been magnificent, we held 17 services around the UK and supported in 6 more,.
‘The Fishermen’s Mission was started, after our founder, Ebenezer Mather, witnessed the traumatic loss of fishermen off the coast at Eyemouth in 1881. Since then we have borne witness to the loss experiences by thousands of families in the UK. The grief lingers within the communties they came from. Brave men who went out to work, to bring home the catch and never came back.
‘It has been an emotional and momentous day for all those who have been affected by this loss and it remains our priviledge to be of service. Next year we hope to extend the reach of these services to many more areas. Thank you to everyone who came and for all your kind words and support’.
