‘Drifter’ is the name of our new run of organic cotton t-shirts. What we now more often refer to as sardines, were historically more often called ‘pilchards’. Pilchard boats would set out to sea, sometimes after shoal-spotters hollered when the silvery fish were seen off shore. The exact practice of sardine fishing varied around the UK, but generally, the larger, boats would use ‘seine’ nets, and smaller boats would opt for ‘drift’ nets. These nets were shot at dusk to drift with the tides; the fishing boat attached to one end of the row. These fishing boats, often small sailing vessels, became known as ‘drifters.’
Sardines were pressed for their valuable oils, and the fish were then salted for sale. Cornish salted pilchards, for example, were exported as far afield as Rome! [1]
