Who We Are
We are the Fishermen’s Mission, the only national charity in the UK that works solely to support fishermen (both active and former) and their families.
Putting fishermen first
For almost 150 years, we have stood beside fishing communities across the country. We offer practical help, community, and faith-rooted care when it’s needed most.
We see a fishing industry where everyone feels supported, valued, and safe, no matter the size of their boat or the waters they work in.
Why we are here

335
injuries or deaths of fishing crews in the last decade

6
average fatalities a year for the past 10 years

Significant under-reporting of accidents
Marine Accident Recommendations and Statistics, Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Annual Reports 2024
Every day, fishermen head to sea to bring food to our tables. They face unpredictable weather, long weeks away from home, and conditions where safety cannot always be guaranteed even with the strictest precautions.
Their work keeps coastal economies alive. However, it often comes at a personal cost. Physical strain, financial pressure, and isolation are common. For some, the sea’s dangers are all too real. Fishing is a way of life, and having to leave it behind can even be a challenge.
We exist to make sure no fisherman – active or former – or fishing family faces those challenges alone.

Peter's story
“We clung to the upturned hull for hours, not knowing if we’d see our families again. The Fishermen’s Mission was there for us.”
– Peter Dadds, a fisherman from Mudeford
Our Mission
We are a charity founded on Christian faith.
Our mission is to provide practical welfare, spiritual care, and friendship to active and former fishermen, along with their families.
We imagine a world where fishermen and their families live without fear, knowing they are never alone.
We see a fishing industry where, no matter its size, every person feels supported, valued, and safe.
Our values
Where we work
We cover the entire coastline of the UK – including Northern Ireland – as well as Jersey and Guernsey. Our staff are mobile and ready to help anywhere: from the busiest ports to the most remote harbours.

Be part of our work
We don’t receive any government or lottery funding, so every donation makes a real difference.
