C-Aware
On Board Against Cancer: C Aware is a first-of-its-kind partnership between the Fishermen’s Mission and Macmillan Cancer Support. It raises cancer awareness among fishermen and the wider fishing community in North Shields.
Normalising conversations about cancer
Fishermen face unique risks in their work and lifestyle that can increase their likelihood of developing cancer. That’s why C Aware takes the message straight to the quayside, working within fishing communities to build understanding around cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and ongoing support.
Breaking down barriers
C Aware is designed for active and retired fishermen, their families, and anyone in the wider fishing community. Together, we are breaking the silence around cancer through:
- signposting to cancer health and community services
- cancer awareness sessions and information brought to the port quayside
- resources designed specifically for the fishing community
- opportunities to share experiences and feedback
- a growing network of Cancer Community Champions
Reducing fear
Cancer affects nearly half of us in our lifetimes, but early detection and awareness make a huge difference.

Through C Aware, we’re working to dispel myths, challenge stigma, and create an environment where fishermen and their families feel comfortable seeking support, talking about their health, and looking out for one another.
We’re not medical professionals — but we are part of the community, and we’re here to start important conversations that can save lives.
Working together for cancer awareness in fishing communities

C Aware is all about partnership. By working with healthcare providers, the voluntary sector, and the fishing industry, we’re improving access to cancer information and care across UK fishing ports.
Our partners and collaborators include:
- GP practices and health trusts
- local and national fishing associations
- public health bodies
- community and neighbourhood health providers
- voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) partners
- Fishermen’s Mission staff and volunteers.
Together we are helping to:
- reduce the number of late-stage cancer diagnoses
- increase uptake of cancer screenings
- strengthen community confidence in seeking help
- provide fishing families with access to clear, trusted advice.
