Mental Health Support

Life at sea can be demanding, isolating and unpredictable. For some fishermen, leaving it behind can be even harder. When things feel overwhelming, talking to someone who understands the fishing world can make a difference.

Your safety comes first

If you or someone else is in danger, call 999 or go to A&E now. If you need urgent help for your mental health, get help from NHS 111 online or call 111.

You can also find a range of support services or – if you do not need help urgently – Get Support from us.

Your mental health is as important as your physical health. You will not be wasting anyone’s time.

Trained listeners who understand

Our Area Managers and Support Officers are all trained Mental Health First Aiders as well as experienced, confidential listeners. Fishermen and families who reach out to us can expect:

Overlapping speech bubbles

Confidential conversations:
On the quay, at home, in a café, on the phone, or online – wherever feels comfortable

Support for overwhelming feelings or addictions:
Whether someone is feeling low, struggling to switch off, dealing with trauma, drinking more than usual, or unsure what they need: we help them make sense of what’s going on and work through the next steps at their pace.

A blue heart

Guidance for the worst circumstances:
Bereavement, accidents, sudden changes, or having to leave the industry can hit families hard. We offer emotional support, practical advice, and access to specialist services.

Ongoing

Ongoing check-ins:
We stay in contact during tough seasons or life transitions, including retirement or leaving the industry, for as long as someone needs us.

Combatting loneliness and isolation

Many struggle with the loss of routine, identity, or harbour community. We can keep people in touch with their community, connect people with local groups, and help rebuild social connections when days feel long and empty.

For families and partners left behind during dangerous seasons, or coping after bereavement, we are there to support them too.

Your support matters

Fishermen work in some of the toughest conditions in the country, and too many carry the emotional burden alone. Your support means they have someone to turn to, whether they are still working at sea or adjusting to life after fishing.
