Mick is not the man he used to be – and he is quick to point the finger at us here at the Fishermen’s Mission for the blame.
While the fisherman from Newhaven is still a character and very much still a typical fisherman, he will happily tell anyone – whether they want to listen or not – that things are different for him these days.
A dramatic change
“It’s true, there has been a dramatic change in me!”
“Clothes that I had to squeeze into are now too large to wear. Even my oilskins are baggy!” Mick says. “I’ve entirely changed my relationship with food and exercise – taking care of my health and looking after myself better.”
With his new approach to his health and regular exercise, Mick has safely lost over two stone and dropped down four clothing sizes.
Just how did he do it?
A nudge from the quayside
Mick says for him, change came in the form of Danny Huff, our Port Officer for Shoreham
“I was urged by Danny to attend a SeaFit® event at Newhaven quayside,” Mick explains. “I really wasn’t interested but Danny was gently persuasive and very persistent – he’s like a dog with a bone!”

Bringing healthcare to fishermen

We run SeaFit® in partnership with the Seafarers’ Hospital Society.
Since we launched it in 2019, we have delivered more than 271 quayside health events. They have helped fishermen access advice, health checks, and support that might otherwise be difficult to get while working at sea.
