Maritime charities Fishermen’s Mission, The Seafarers’ Charity, and Stella Maris joined forces to support the first annual National Fishing Remembrance Day, held on Sunday 12 May 2024. The day honours those who have lost their lives while fishing at sea.
Ali Godfrey, our Director of Business Development, said:
“Our port team have been magnificent. We held 17 services across the UK and supported six more. It was an emotional and momentous day for everyone affected by these losses.”
The Fishermen’s Mission was founded in 1881 after our founder, Ebenezer Mather, witnessed the tragic loss of fishermen off the coast at Eyemouth. Since then, we have been there for thousands of families across the UK, bearing witness to the grief that lingers in the communities left behind. Brave men went out to work to bring home the catch—and sometimes never returned.
Ali continued:
“Being able to support families and communities on this day remains our privilege. We hope that next year we can extend these services to even more areas. Thank you to everyone who came and for all your kind words and support.”
