A Brighter Future: Retired Fisherman Tommy Finds Safety and Warmth

Published 25 September 2025

Fishermen’s cottages are often described as picture-perfect – whitewashed stone walls, sea views and cosy interiors. But for some retired fishermen, the reality can be far from charming.

When one of our Port Officers met Tommy, a retired fisherman, they were shocked by what they found. Tommy was living in a damp, mould-filled cottage. Rags stuffed into window gaps couldn’t keep out the icy wind. He had no heating, no electricity, and no way to get warm.

Meeting Tommy

The electricity company had mistakenly cut off his power supply, leaving him in darkness through the cold winter. Tommy only survived thanks to the kindness of his local community, who even provided him with a hot Christmas dinner.

While waiting for the power to be restored, our Port Officer noticed a guitar in the corner and encouraged Tommy to play.

“It was wonderful to see the real Tommy come alive as he strummed some old tunes.”

Giving Fishermen a Voice

Getting the electricity back on was just the start. Our team worked with landlords and council housing officers to improve Tommy’s living situation.

Many retired fishermen like Tommy lack the confidence or know-how to deal with landlords and official agencies. Acting as an advocate makes a life-changing difference – giving people a voice when they struggle to find their own words.

Tommy’s situation is complex, but there is hope. Steps are being taken to secure him a safe, warm home where he can live with dignity.
