There are not always neat solutions or easy answers to the challenges facing the fishermen and families we meet. Cases can be complex and sensitive, and finding a way forward can take time.
Walking alongside people through difficult times and bringing hope where it is needed is at the heart of our work. In Devon, our Support Officer Rebecca tells us about one fisherman facing a number of challenges in his health, finances and home life.
Life can become complicated
We had known this fisherman for many years when his family became concerned about his health and wellbeing.
He had experienced ongoing physical and mental health challenges, alongside problems with addiction. Periods of illness meant he spent significant time in hospital, while his health made it increasingly difficult for him to return to the fishing he loved.
Spending more time ashore also created financial pressure. Without a regular income, debts began to build, adding another layer of worry to an already difficult situation.
At the same time, changes to his family’s housing circumstances created further stress and uncertainty.
Finding a way forward
Rather than facing these challenges alone, the fisherman could turn to us here at the Fishermen’s Mission.
We connected him with a local organisation that provides specialist support for people experiencing addiction. He began attending regular sessions and taking steps towards improving his health.
We also connected him with the local foodbank and SAIL (Seafarers’ Advice and Information Line), helping him access practical assistance and advice around his finances.
When he returned home after a recent hospital stay, we provided emergency supermarket vouchers to make sure he had access to essentials. We are also exploring longer-term financial assistance as he works towards greater stability.
Here for the long haul
For this fisherman and his family, there is no simple route through the challenges they face. There will be good days and difficult days, and progress may not always be straightforward.
But they do not have to face those days alone.
We can walk alongside fishermen and their families for as long as they need us. We build relationships, connect people with specialist services and provide practical care when circumstances become difficult.
