Fishermen's Stories

A New Start for Tony

Published 10 July 2024

Tony’s life has always been tied to the sea. From his earliest days learning the ways of fishing at 15, to decades bringing home the catch, the world of fishing shaped him. His love of the sea can be seen in his home, decorated with fishing memorabilia and wallpaper featuring boats and lobster pots.

But life after retirement hasn’t been easy. Tony faces a degenerative eye condition, hearing loss, and trauma from past relationships. After an ex-crewmate encouraged him to reach out, he contacted the Fishermen’s Mission for support.

Practical help and emotional support

Amanda Wisher, our Area Officer for East Anglia, explains:

“When Tony came to us, he was trying to rebuild his life after those he trusted had left him in a difficult situation. His home had been trashed, with much of his furniture and possessions damaged beyond repair. We helped replace the essentials, giving Tony a platform to begin his recovery—both emotionally and physically.”

Staying connected with the fishing community

Tony remains passionate about fishing. Amanda recalls:

“He remembers learning from older fishermen as a boy and has collected pictures of the boats he fished on. Recently, he even went on a tour of a working fishing vessel and ended up conducting the tour himself because he knew more than the guide!”

Connecting with others has been just as important for Tony’s recovery. He is now a regular at the Lowestoft Fishermen’s Mission Coffee Morning.

“Getting Tony along to the Coffee Morning has been brilliant,” Amanda says. “He’s formed a friendship with another retired fisherman who was also living alone. They meet regularly and enjoy sharing tales of life on the high seas, trying to outdo each other with their stories!”
