Fishermen's Stories

Contrasting Care

Published 23 May 2024

Life at sea can be unpredictable, and the challenges don’t always end when fishermen return to shore. Recently, the Fishermen’s Mission was able to support Sean, a young fisherman from Northern Ireland, and his family during a very difficult time.

Providing support during serious illness

Sean had recently undergone treatment for bowel cancer. Facing months away from fishing, he was worried about providing for his family. His wife was also overwhelmed, anxious about their four children and the strain Sean’s illness would place on the household.

Lesley Hammond, our Area Officer in Northern Ireland, explains:

“Sean told us it felt like his whole world had collapsed around him. Thankfully, they contacted the Fishermen’s Mission, and we were able to provide the financial security they needed until Sean could return to work. Importantly, we also offered support to his wife, helping her through those difficult days.”

Thankfully, Sean’s treatment has gone well, and his outlook is positive. He says:

“We are deeply humbled by the love and support the Fishermen’s Mission showed us, especially at Christmas when they made it an extra-special time for the children.”

Bringing retired fishermen together

Support for fishing communities isn’t just about emergency help—connection and companionship are vital too. Northern Ireland Port Officer Ingrid Perry shares:

“Every Tuesday morning, we host a group of retired fishermen, known as the ‘Aul Sea Dogs’. The group was formed by our Kilkeel Centre caretaker, Robert Campbell, who has been volunteering with us for over 20 years.”

“Robert does a fantastic job bringing together retired fishermen from across Northern Ireland for a weekly cuppa. The veteran trawlermen love the banter and the craic, recalling their days at sea and the adventures they shared. For many, it is the highlight of their week as they have very little social interaction elsewhere.”
