Life can sometimes feel like waves crashing against the bow of a fishing boat—one challenge after another. Robert, a former fisherman from South Wales, experienced just that, facing housing problems, debt, and ill health all at once.
Andrew Tait, our Fishermen’s Mission Area Officer for Wales, explains that knowing who to speak to—and what to say—can make all the difference when handling complex cases like Robert’s.
Supporting Robert through multiple challenges
“Robert had to stop fishing years ago due to health issues,” Andrew says, “but new health problems meant he was making a 100-mile round trip for hospital appointments. On top of that, a utility company was threatening him over historic debt, and his landlord told him he had to leave the home he’d lived in for 20 years, as it was being sold.”
Andrew stepped in to provide guidance and advocacy. He referred Robert to SAIL (Seafarers’ Advice and Information Line) and applied for grant support. Because Robert has difficulty hearing on the phone, Andrew joined him on calls to ensure he could communicate effectively.
Next, Andrew helped Robert deal with the utility company, arranging a payment plan for the current year and ensuring the debt will be written off within a year. “Robert wanted to clear his debt but simply couldn’t navigate a solution on his own,” Andrew explains.
Providing practical help for day-to-day needs
While these issues were ongoing, Robert’s mother, who lived some distance away, became seriously ill. To ease the burden, the Fishermen’s Mission provided food vouchers so Robert could focus his limited income on visiting her.
“Robert knows he can always call me if he’s struggling,” says Andrew. “His problems aren’t completely solved, but with the right support he can see a way forward.”
