Fishermen's Stories

When Sid Met Sally – Sally Taylor

Published 25 July 2023

He once battled hostile seas to bring home the catch. Today he faces a different adversary. Fishermen’s Mission Area Officer in Hull, Sally Taylor, tells us of an hour spent with Sid.

Narrow paths run between tiny front gardens, littered with broken glass, dog mess, and old rubbish. Amid the clutter and overgrown weeds, Sid’s house stands out with its tidy garden and blue front door. Inside, the living room is bare and gloomy—floor-to-ceiling damp, minimal furniture, and planks on the skirting boards to keep out rats. Yet, the room is tidy, a small reflection of the pride Sid carries despite his circumstances.

Sid, a small man in a hand-knitted jumper, speaks proudly of his life at sea. He recalls adventures with his crewmates, yet his loneliness is palpable. He rarely sees his family, and the weight of isolation is clear in his wavering voice and teary eyes.

How Fishermen’s Mission Helps

One hour with Sally, our Area Officer, makes a huge difference. We can:

  • apply for Sid to move into a safe, comfortable flat at Trinity House
  • provide essential items, like a washing machine (he currently washes clothes by hand in the bath)
  • ensure he receives all benefits he is entitled to
  • offer ongoing pastoral support and companionship

By the time Sally leaves, Sid is brighter, holding a copy of our Network magazine and feeling renewed hope for the future.
