One fisherman’s journey: life, loss, and legacy
At the Fishermen’s Mission, we pride ourselves on serving at the heart of our fishing communities. Whether responding to emergencies or offering long-term care, we walk alongside fishermen and their families as the stories of their lives unfold.
Our care can be as shifting as the tides, but it’s the journey alongside each family that matters.
A familiar face in Grimsby’s fishing community
One family we’ve worked with is that of two Peters: father and son, both proud fishermen. Our Mission Area Officer in Grimsby, Suesan, first met them when supporting Peter senior.
The younger Peter was someone Suesan had encountered several times amongst the local community.
“I’d see him and his wife, Dale, at various events,” says Suesan. “Peter had also long been involved in planning a memorial bench for fishermen lost in conflict.”
When he came to Suesan with shocking news of his cancer diagnosis in July 2024, we were ready to stand by him as we had his father and the rest of his family.
Standing with fishermen when illness hits
“We chatted things through, and I explained to Peter the support the Fishermen’s Mission provided.”
Our goal was simple: lift the pressure so Peter could focus on his health and his family.
Suesan coordinated with our maritime charity partners to secure grants that cleared Peter’s debts and covered essential living costs. “Peter responded to treatment, and by March… He was planning a return to work,” said Suesan. “Our care changed to a pastoral role.”
Even as Peter looked forward, we remained by his side — a steady, listening presence through recovery.
Holding space for grief
In early April, Peter was struck by a sudden infection that developed into sepsis. Just days before his 67th birthday, he passed away.
“My care now turned to Dale, their daughter Chloe, and the grandchildren.”
Peter’s loss was especially painful for his family, coming so soon after a hopeful period of recovery. The shock was profound.
As someone deeply rooted in Grimsby’s fishing community, Suesan continues to provide compassionate, personal support. She visits the family often, creating space to grieve, share memories, and celebrate the life of a well-loved man.
“I was honoured to arrange and undertake Peter’s funeral.”
Her support didn’t stop there. As always, it evolved to meet the changing needs of the people she serves.
Our long-term commitment to support
“The journey continues with Dale,” says Suesan. “I will now apply for a regular Biannual Grant from the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society.”
This ongoing financial support, made possible by partner organisations and donations from people like you, ensures that Dale and her family are not left to navigate grief and uncertainty alone.
