Following the success of Whitby’s first ever Fish and Ships Festival held in May, Organisers have presented a cheque for £1,451.46 to the Fishermen’s mission.

Funds were raised for the charity during the festival weekend by holding a fish auction with local businesses, a fish sale to the public and collection box donations from people enjoying the festival.

The Auction, sponsored by Lockers Fish, was held at Whitby Fish Quay. A range of local businesses took part, including The Magpie, Lockers Fish, Hodgson Fish, Quayside, Dennis Crooks and L&W Shellfish. All of the proceeds of the auction were donated to the Fishermen’s Mission.

The display of fresh fish, supplied by Hodgson Fish and Lockers Fish, was sold off to the general public and filleted and prepared to take home by Ryan Vasey and Andrew Barker.

Janet Deacon, Scarborough Borough Council Tourism and Corporate Marketing Manager, said: “We are delighted that almost one and a half thousand pounds was raised for the very worthwhile cause that that means a lot to the people of Whitby, in particular those families that have strong links to the fishing community .
“I would like to thank the generosity of the local businesses that helped with fundraising and the visitors

who travelled from far and wide to enjoy the festival and help make it a great success.”

Rebecca Bennett, Company Director of Lockers Fish, one of the Sponsors of the Fish and Ships Festival, said: “The festival was a fantastic event to sponsor and be part of and it gave the town the opportunity to open the fish quay to the public.

“There was an array of demonstrations from fish filleting, shellfish preparation, cooking demonstrations and net/pot mending workshops. “as well as the traditional fish auction in which many local businesses took part for charity, the fresh fish stand showcased 13 different species for the public to view and ask questions about.
“It was fantastic to see Whitby’s fish market thriving once again and it was a wonderful celebration for the town.”
